Useful tips to prevent burnout

Burnout from work is called a syndrome of the 21st century. The presence of gadgets, constant monitoring of news, and involvement in the work process 24/7 do not give our brains a single second of rest. According to the research, burnout is most commonly experienced by people whose profession involves working with people. Teachers, psychologists, and volunteers – often work to the limit of their capabilities. However, burnout has recently become popular for those who work from home. Since the boundaries between work and home are blurred, there is no need to turn off work chats at night or take a full lunch break. You are always in touch, ready to take on an additional task. In addition, burnout appears due to the lack of communication with colleagues. You stop feeling like a part of the company and start to think that you are doing as much as possible and that all the rest are doing nothing.

 

What is burnout? This is the result of long-term chronic stress in professional activities. This is one of the characteristics of professional deformation. If you feel negativity related to work, emotional and physical exhaustion, lack of motivation, new tasks at work annoy you, or you don’t want to get out of bed for work at all, then most likely you have burnout.

 

What should be done so that these symptoms disappear or do not appear at all? It will not be enough to simply take a weekend or vacation, because when you return to work, the stress and usual duties will not go anywhere.

 

– Learn to refuse. If you are constantly “inundated” with the additional workload, you work without days off, then it’s time to give these things up.

– Learn to use your breaks and weekends. Take a full lunch hour, or go on vacation – is necessary for your health. And don’t forget to turn off your work notifications for this time.

– Understand the cause of burnout. Incorrect organization of time, too many duties, or something else.

– Find an occupation that will bring pleasure. Obsession with work can be the cause of burnout. Find an activity that will evoke emotions in you: going to the gym, drawing lessons, traveling, reading, or anything not related to work.

– Do not hesitate to ask for help or an additional day off.

– Do not be afraid to change the field at all. Sometimes it takes a long time to recover and feel the passion for work again. And sometimes it’s important to understand that it’s not burnout, it’s just not your passion anymore.

 

Be honest with yourself and monitor how you feel. Society encourages us to overwork, to be involved in it 24/7, and to burn out. But this strategy doesn’t work for everyone.
